How to Get State Jobs After Americorps

Thursday, 11 November 2010

AmeriCorps is a government program that recruits 70,000 Americans annually to serve in communities nationwide with special needs. Often called the domestic alternative to the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps members identify needs and address issues in underserved communities. This may include serving in education, health services, housing, recreation and development. AmeriCorps members may find government jobs after their service.

  1. 1
Register on My AmeriCorps. My AmeriCorps is an online resource for members and alumni, which allows you to connect with alumni as well as directors in various AmeriCorps locations. You may also get updates about job postings and other information of interest to AmeriCorps members.
  2. 2
Read the AmeriCorps handout, "Next Steps: Life After AmeriCorps." This handbook features seven chapters that will help you transition from your service to the real world. It also has information about how others benefited from the experience and what you can do in the next few years to build on what you have learned. This handout is available for download on the AmeriCorps' transition website.
  3. 3
Use the resources available at National Services Resources, a website dedicated to helping AmeriCorps members after their service. You may find career guides and information about formatting your resume and cover letter to emphasize your skills and service experience.
  4. 4
Go to your state's personnel or employment website. States have dedicated employment websites for job seekers looking for state jobs. Apply for state jobs on these websites, and submit a resume highlighting your AmeriCorps experience. Government hiring looks favorably on AmeriCorps service. Make sure that you apply for positions that will allow you to transfer and develop the skills you acquired through service.

Utilize your AmeriCorps network by contacting it. AmeriCorps also has a LinkedIn group, which you can use to connect with members online. Program directors as well as other service members are familiar with community leaders, who may help in hiring you for a state position. Also inquire about internships to keep your options open.
