Career job information for job seekers and find good employment job

 by Talent Ocean
Hiring companies have traditionally facilitated business’s recruitment processes completely, but usually at a significant fee. As businesses tighten up on costs, hiring companies have had to differentiate themselves, and offer less costly hiring services.
Differentiated hiring companies :
1. Temporary hiring companies
Some hiring companies focus only on fulfilling short-term or temporary work assignments for businesses. This makes the workforce flexible and hiring companies are able to charge businesses only for time worked, making this staffing solution far more cost effective than permanent hiring companies can.
2. Permanent hiring companies
These hiring companies still focus on hiring only permanent employees for businesses. Hiring companies like this used to do full recruitment services for companies hiring permanent staff, from start to finish. These days, permanent hiring companies are modularising their services, so businesses can decide to use only certain services of these hiring companies in order to keep costs down. You can now use hiring companies for only CV screening or interviewing, etc, depending on your budget.
3. Time and attendance services
A few hiring companies have recognised that businesses can save themselves between 10-15% on payroll costs by implementing time and attendance systems. These hiring companies still provide staff to businesses, either permanent or temp, but they also facilitate time and attendance. This means that the hiring companies can facilitate exact payroll amounts based on exact hours worked and in the case of permanent employees, hiring companies can now allow businesses to monitor productivity of these employees.
4. Onsite hiring companies
Some hiring companies even offer onsite recruitment services, where recruiters from the hiring companies are based at the businesses they recruit for. This means that hiring companies are far closer to the business’s employee requirements and are able to handle all hiring requirements timeously and as they happen. These hiring companies facilitate a speedy turnaround time from vacancy to candidate selection and in the long run, this is a cost saving for the business. ( jobs employment )
Hiring companies who are able to differentiate themselves and save businesses money in the long run will become preferred service suppliers to businesses who are cash-strapped and unable to afford the often costly services of more old-school hiring companies.

EDP and MIS- The Common Requirements in Both Careers

Career job information for job seekers and find good employment job

Electronic Data Processing or EDP refers to using automated methods for processing the commercial data. The concept behind this form of data processing is simple- it uses the repetitive activities in order to form a congregation of relative information of large volumes. For instance, bank transactions may require sorting to get relevant customer files and data. The same is the case with reservation systems, given the work behind data processing, it is understood that it forms an essential form of a business or the market in general. As a specialist in data processing, one will require to offer supervision over computer systems for supporting tasks as well as projects that require processing of large amounts of data.
As opposed to EDP, the MIS jobs have a slightly different approach. For people who have expert level penchant for business and computers, MIS jobs stand out as the prominent career path. Mostly, MIS involves the application of the information from IT sector to offer plausible and pragmatic business solutions. Thus, in contradiction with MIS, Electronic Data Processing asks a person to offer high-level of computer maintenance such as that of mainframe computers. This may also include handling the minor issues such as troubleshooting and back-ups. With MIS, the work only circles around management functions, operational activities, as well as offering corporate effectiveness for developing a functional business.
The vast set of information that increases every passing hour calls for a suitable and pragmatic management solution that could help in better assessment of data and its processing. Relational databases are used with great proficiency in order to restore equilibrium with data and its components through EDP. Data processing specialists need to have developed technical skills such as comfortable using of software that could incorporate a better management of the available data. The person is also required to be able to use the standardised methodologies that could act as the imminent business solutions in a crisis.
Given the expansion rate of IT industry, it is bound that both EDP as well as MIS have contributing roles in the industry. Management skills are the most sought-after skills for a person looking for a profile in IT industry. The IT jobs information would usually include requirements such as that of management decisions, analytical ability, problem-solving ability, as well as the ability to develop interpersonal relations. As far as the professional scenario is concerned, a person looking for MIS  needs to have technical knowledge about the emerging technologies as well as well as the concepts of OOP, system analysis to develop a marked career.( jobs employment )

Oilfield Job: A Mudlogger's Career Advancement To Data Engineer And Beyond

Career job information for job seekers and find good employment job

by Calvin Loh
The oil and gas industry is desperately looking for workers at all levels. They would prefer experienced workers, but beggars can't be choosers - many of their most experienced staff are reaching retirement age in the next few years and they need those skills transferred before it is too late. Besides roustabouts, a mudlogger is another entry level oilfield job which leads to better things. Many senior staff on oil rigs started off as mudloggers.

A mudlogger:
  • connect various sensors to the drilling apparatus and install specialized equipment
  • collects geological samples of rock cuttings from the oil well (as part of the oil drilling process)
  • monitor gases coming up out of the wellbore as an indicator of hydrocarbons
  • prepares and analyses them geologically
  • writes a report on them
  • enters the information into the database.

Mudloggers work 12-hour shifts, and there are always 2 of them on an oil rig to ensure 24-hour coverage. The job is strenuous and challenging, especially when you have to install equipment and collect samples while drilling is actively going on. You have to be diligent, because part of your duties includes monitoring the level of dangerous gas which can cause a well blowout.

There is high turnover in this oilfield job. Most mudloggers work for oil services companies - not directly for the major companies like Shell or BP. Larger service companies require you to have a geology degree, and expect you to move up the career ladder quickly. Most mudloggers are young, in their early twenties and single. It is rare to see a middle-aged mudlogger. After 6 months to two years of work, you would ideally gain promotion to data engineer, with more responsibilities. As a data engineer, you will also troubleshoot problems which arise, and maintain and repair sensors as needed. For many mudloggers, the eventual aim is to become the wellsite geologist.

Although a mudlogger is an entry level oilfield job, you will earn at least $50,000 annually. Recent information from the American Association of Petroleum Geologists' April 2008 meeting showed that graduate students with Masters and PhD degrees were receiving salaries of $80,000 to $110,000. Compare this to $55,000 in 2003.

Another perk of your job is travel. Many oil services companies have operations all over the world. For example, Geoservices has service contracts throughout oil rigs on the North Sea. Their employees get the opportunity to travel throughout northern Europe - Norway, Denmark and Holland - when they are off-duty. Working 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off means that you have plenty of time to explore the countries where you are based.

Some new hires hope to use a mudlogger oilfield job to get hired for bigger things by a major oil company like Exxon. This strategy has mixed success. In the United States, many oil wells are owned by wildcatters, who sell their oil to the oil companies. In the North Sea, too, many subcontractors and service companies are used to operate offshore oil rigs. Typically, companies like Shell have only a token presence on board these offshore oil rigs - the company man. Everyone else works for the contractor.

Right now, geology graduates with advanced degrees are being headhunted even before they graduate. But not everyone can go to graduate school, and not every geology student can score straight A's to attract a company like Halliburton. If your results are only average, your best chance to get an oilfield job is to use proven oil rig employment placement services.

Offshore Drilling Jobs: How To Get Hired Without Drilling Experience

Career job information for job seekers and find good employment job

  by Calvin Loh

So, you want to work on an offshore drilling job. Do you know which companies are involved in offshore oil drilling? Besides the super-big players like Esso, BP, Shell, etc. Did you know that these big boys do not always do their own drilling? Quite often nowadays, they are forced to subcontract some of the work to smaller players.

Have you heard of these companies: Diamond Offshore (Houston, USA), Dolphin Drilling (Tananger, Norway), and Frigstad Offshore (Singapore)? How about Offrig Drilling ASA, Scorpion Offshore, Songa Offshore and Thule Drilling ASA? These are just some of the companies in the modern oil industry. In their own way, you can call them the modern wildcatters. During the last slump in oil prices, the giants like BP and Shell stopped investing in their staff and oil drilling technologies. But some smaller companies correctly predicted that prices would rise again. They invested in R&D to develop new drilling techniques and technologies. They build new oil rigs for deep-ocean drilling. These are the boys that Shell and BP are sub-contracting for oil drilling services.

If you want to work on an offshore oil drilling rig, you have two main choices. The path most people think of is to go on board as part of the drill crew. If you have prior experience, you will probably be a pumpman or dereckman. If not, you have to get in as a roughneck or roustabout. Drillers are pretty much the 2nd-in-command and assistant of the oil rig manager. Technically, a roughneck/roustabout is a laborer. On the other hand, how many laborers earn $50,000 per year for just 6 months of work every year? Unlike a normal laborer, who never gets the chance to work his way up to manager level, a roughneck with the proper attitude has a reasonable chance to become a manager on an oil rig. Of course, first he has to work his way through dereckman and driller.

This is not the only way. If you have some useful trade, like a cook or medic, this will be a good choice regardless of your offshore oil rig experience. You get the same generous living conditions of the drill crew, and better salary than a comparable job on dry land. ( jobs employment )

Just because it is an offshore oil rig does not mean it does not need office staff. No matter where you go, you can't escape paperwork. You'll still find your paper pushers. Except that on the oil rig they are called tool pushers. They work in the rig offices and rig floors.

You also have the mechanical department and electrical department. The mechanical department hires motormen, mechanics and maintenance supervisors who are responsible for all mechanical operations. The electrical department includes jobs like electrician, electronics technician and maintenance supervisors who repair and look after of all the electrical equipment.

An offshore drilling job is a very lucrative career. As you can see, you do not need drilling experience to get hired on an offshore oil rig. And now that you know there are companies other than Shell hiring people, you have many ways to get in on the action. You can get in as part of the drill crew, or as a tradesman.

Oil Rig Jobs - The Most Important Things You Need To Know

Career job information for job seekers and find good employment job

 by Graham Lavery

Oil rig jobs may sound like tough soliciting jobs, but there are advantages provided for the employees that are not to be neglected. When on the rig, you get to live in a room that can be easily taken as a luxurious hotel room, while other expenses, like food or laundry, are supported by your employer.

There are many jobs that you can take on if you decide for such a career. You can be a driller, a derrickman, a shakerhand or a mudman. Other positions are those as a toolpusher, a floorman or a motorman. Jobs as assistant driller, crane operator, roustabouts, electrician or storekeeper are to be found on an oil rig. These employers also need people for jobs as sub sea engineer, rig mechanic, rig electrician, rig welder, barge engineer, ballast controlman, up to captain, chief engineer, rig medic and safety man.

One of the best parts of working on an oil rig is that you work 14 days for 21 days off, which means that more than half an year you are on vacation.

Most oil rig jobs are in countries like Saudi Arabia, United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Russia, China, Nigeria, Mexico, Norway, Kuwait, Venezuela or United Arab Emirates.

Jobs like roughnecks are paid about $300 a day, making for an annual salary of about $47,000.

Those that can apply for a more specialized job can earn up to $100,000 per year.

In general, salaries on an oil rig go from about $50,000 for an entry level position up to $220,000.

There are some safety measures that you will need to comply to. You will be provided with safety boots, hard hat, safety glasses and coveralls. You must keep your attention alert and you may be required to take night shifts. There are certain places where you can smoke and you must take off your equipment when you go eat. Another rule is to keep a good relation with your co-workers.

You must watch out for the color codes on the lifting equipment. These will indicate you that the equipment was tested as safe on the last check.

Weapons of any kind are forbidden on an oil rig. You cannot bring knives, lighters or matches as well as any alcohol or drugs.

You must also know that when you work on an offshore rig, you must remove the batteries from the electrical equipment in your luggage. Also, you are not allowed to carry your cell phone on the helicopter. ( jobs employment )

Not every job on an oil rig is about hard physical labor. There are positions for the catering section or the medical section. For instance, doctors are expected to follow these rules. They may come in contact with all kinds of diseases while working on an oil rig. As the workers are usually brought from different parts of the world, they may not be able to speak the doctor's language, so it is expected that the medical crew knows more than one foreign language so they can communicate with the patient. This type of job also includes night shifts. Their job description includes maintenance of the emergency supplies, verifying the water supplies, inspecting the food and conducting first aid seminars for the people on the oil rig.

How Do You Find Oil Mining Jobs?

Career job information for job seekers and find good employment job

 by Peter

How do you find oil mining jobs? You could contact the member companies of theMinerals Council of Australia or send your resume to the 1500 differentcompanies around the world. But, youmight want to do a few other things first.
Deciding which job is right for you would be a good place tostart. There are many different kinds ofprofessionals, trades people, laborers and helpers that work at the rigs.
Geologists, scientists and petroleum technicians areinvolved in locating the drilling sites. Engineers and drafters work out the details of how the rig will bedesigned.
Construction crews are involved in setting up theoperation. Some become fulltimeemployees once the well starts producing.
Drill operators are always needed. A large number of roustabouts (unskilledlaborers and helpers) typically work at the rigs. If you are unskilled, you would probablystart as a roustabout.
Truck drivers of all kinds are needed. They operate forklifts and other equipment onthe site. Sometimes, they are involvedin transporting the crude.
On off-shore drilling platforms, the personnel are dividedinto two classifications; essential and incidental. Essential personnel include managers, teamleaders, engineers and equipment operators.
Fire fighters are eligible for oil mining jobs. They are considered essential at offshore andsome onshore sites. When the location isfar away from the nearest city, emergency response teams must be on hand.
Offshore companies sometimes hire helicopter pilots totransport workers and small equipment and basically “run errands”. People with experience in operating boats andother watercraft are essential employees for the drilling platforms.
Regardless of the location of the rig, companies needdrillers, roughnecks, derrick hands and tool pushers. If you are new to the industry, you may beunfamiliar with these terms. If that’sthe case, the best thing for you to do is to take some courses.
It is possible to get oil mining jobs without experience ortraining, but it can be difficult. Thepay is good and the positions are popular. Hiring departments are picky. Lives could depend on your safety knowledge.
Courses can be completed relatively quickly and they arevery affordable. Considering that theaverage oil-rig worker makes between $75 and $150K per year, you can afford toinvest in an education.
Once you have the courses to include on your resume, you aremore likely to get oil mining jobs. Asit is with any industry, well-trained and experienced people have the bestchances of getting the job. ( jobs employment )

From 'Just A Job' To Your Dream Career
    Copyright © 2006, Deborah Brown-Volkman

Are you in a career you love, or in a job you are tolerating?

What's the difference? If you're working strictly to earn a
paycheck to pay the bills, you have a job. If your days are
filled with passion and delight for the work you do, you have
    a dream career.

So how is your career going? Is it filled with dreams or
    nightmares?

We all have responsibilities. Bills to pay and futures to save
for. Going to work is reality. So why not shoot for the stars?
Why not have a goal to make a great salary while doing work you
    love?

Impossible? Guess what? It won't happen until you decide that it
will happen. When you tackle new challenges in your career, the
beginning is the hardest. Once you jump in, your goals take
shape, and they begin to seem realer and easier to achieve.

Here is how some of my clients described their dream careers when
they were at the beginning of their shift from job to career:

"My dream career would be focusing on the areas where I can find
fulfillment and can make a difference in the lives of others. It
has to be creative." Linda May

"My dream career would be working at something I'd do if no one
paid me to do it." Dale Alvaraz

"It has to get me excited. So excited that I would rather work
than watch TV or do something else. Another indicator is when I
can wake up early without an alarm clock and I am looking forward
    to the day." Alex So

So How To Do Make The Shift From "Just A Job" To Your Dream
Career? Follow These Four Steps Below:

    1. Recognize That You Want More

Do you know in your heart that you want a career that gives you
meaning, purpose, and satisfaction? Listen to your inner voice,
because what it is saying to you will not go away until you act.
When you get to a point in your career when you know it is not
working anymore, it's important that you do something about it.

    2. Get Ready Mentally To Have More

Write down what your dream career is. If you do not know, write
down what it's not. When you know what you don't want, the flip
side is what you do want. Look at this piece of paper everyday.
Review it in the morning. Look at it during lunch. Go over your
words before you go to sleep. This process will help your
thoughts sink in and become a part of your subconscious.

What keeps many of my clients from saying "I can achieve my dream
career" is fear. Fear is normal. There's always fear when we take
on new goals. But ask yourself which fear is harder to be with:
the fear of knowing that you did not give your career its best
shot, or a fear of failing?

    3. Get Into Action To Have More

Nothing happens until someone does something. And, if you want a
dream career, you have to get moving. Act. One action leads to
another, which leads to another. This is how goals are reached.
Bit by bit. Piece by piece.

When you work on your dream career, a little bit each day, your
wish will be granted. Consistency is key. Most of us do not
believe that we have hours each day to work on our career, but
the truth is we do. How about working on your career 1/2 hour in
the morning, 15 minutes at lunch, 1/2 hour before you leave the
office at night, or an hour after dinner? Breaking your dream
career into small achievable pieces will make a tremendous
difference. You will be surprised and amazed at how much progress
    you will make.

    4. Recognize That Anything Worthwhile Takes Time

All goals take time. And, the time they take to become real
usually takes longer than we'd like. Know that this is part of
    the process.

Keep moving no matter what, even if you do not feel like. Trust
that you are on the right path. Your dream career will happen,
because you want it to happen. The effort you put in will be
worth it, because the end result will be a career you can proud
    of.

So, what do you say? You only have one life to live, so it
might as well be a life you love!

Socialize Successfully With Your Boss and Employees

Career job information for job seekers and find good employment job

During the twenty-three years I spent in management, there were many occasions when I participated in social events with my employees. Likewise, I attended parties where my supervisors were present.
By participating in hundreds of receptions, dinners, celebrations, award ceremonies, fund raising campaign kickoffs and other out of the office happenings, I have learned which communication behaviors work and which ones backfire.
You will agree that, handled wisely, social time with employees can boost morale. Employees welcome chances to get to know the boss as a person, not just a manager. During the frenetic work week, they encounter the boss as the source of discipline, assignments, occasional reprimands and, typically, very little personal chit chat. So it's refreshing to be around the supervisor when she showcases her humor, asks about your family and hobbies, and gives an unrestrained laugh.
However, both employees and bosses should be aware that the social scene does not erase the workplace lines of authority. Example: Because the boss likes your personality at a party does not mean you will get the next promotion, which depends instead on your professional skills.

Here are seven guidelines that every employer and employee should keep in mind for after-hours mingling:
ONE: Avoid off color humor. The jokes you would tell your golf buddies could jeopardize your professional reputation if you share them with workplace colleagues, no matter how informal the setting. True, they might laugh out of courtesy, or maybe from discomfort. Yet you risk losing their respect. Play safe. Don't tell any joke that you wouldn't tell at an office staff meeting.

TWO: Refrain from touching, other than a handshake greeting, unless you happen to go dancing with the group. Draping an arm around a colleague might prompt an eventual lawsuit, especially when you don't give that person an expected raise. And the employee who caresses the boss can create an image of fakery and pandering.

THREE: Drink moderately. Every year, holiday parties, company picnics and similar outings become career graveyards for bosses and employees who want to become "the life of the party."
Sometimes we assume that two more drinks will help us talk more easily. That's a mistake. Two more drinks will encourage you to talk more--period. The impaired speaking and unsteady walk that follow those extra cocktails could brand you: "lush," "a drunk," "undisciplined," or something similar.
Along those lines, never mention that drinking is important to you. Stay away from "Nothing like a stiff drink at the end of the day to help a guy unwind." Whimsically, we slip into comments like that, such as "Thought that bartender would never bring our order." Although you are trying to inject a bit of levity into the conversation, the quips could backfire, categorizing you as a problem drinker.

FOUR: Make sure you circulate among everyone present, not just the managerial group you feel most comfortable with. The person who talks with his or her clique and avoids everyone else nullifies the inclusive good will the event is intended to foster. Spend time with line employees as well as "the suits."

FIVE: Avoid shop talk. Demonstrate that you have an interesting, meaningful life away from the corporation. Nobody wants to hear your opinions about a five year plan, a drop in sales or the employee you had to fire. As an old song advises, "talk happy talk, things that people like to hear."
Stay well informed about major sporting events, releases of new movies, great places to vacation, new restaurants your friends have recommended, bestselling books and national events. Definitely, party goers want to talk about them, not corporate problems and plans.

SIX: Listen attentively. Good listeners become our favorite people. We move away from motormouths who dominate conversations. Encourage others to talk, with comments like "very interesting," "tell me more," and "What happened next?"
When Stephen Covey wrote 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, he titled chapter five, "Seek first to understand, and then to be understood." Follow that advice, and you'll become the hit of the company's social outing.

SEVEN: Mind your manners. If the occasion includes a meal, pay special attention to your table etiquette. You want to look like you belong at top-tier banquets. Illustrate that you have acquired polish and grace.

Need a refresher on manners and other public protocol? Then I suggest the book 5 Steps to Professional Presence, by Susan Bixler and Lisa Scherrer Dugan.

  • You Are What You Eat In Your Career

Career job information for job seekers and find good employment job

How do you feel today? Do you feel good with lots of energy? Or, do you feel drained and unable to get into the day?
How you feel at work is directly related to what you put into your body. Had a cup of coffee with 2 spoonfuls of sugar and a donut this morning? In a few hours you will be exhausted. Had fast food for lunch? In a few hours you will be exhausted. Had a pint of ice cream after dinner last night? This means you woke up exhausted.
Many people treat their cars better than their bodies. Would we put bad fuel into our cars? The answer hopefully is no. So why do we put less than optimum food into our bodies?
What you eat affects your power, passion, the title you have, the money you make, and the energy level in your career. If you do not feel good inside, how can you expect to perform well on the outside?
Being healthy at work is difficult. We reach for sugar and caffeine to start our day because we are tired. Maybe, we pulled an all-nighter. Maybe, we have been pushing hard to make sure a project succeeds. Maybe, our boss or co-workers are driving us crazy and a piece of chocolate makes us forget about it for a while. And, what about the cake that goes along with birthdays and other celebrations? The candy on the desks of co-workers we pass by numerous times every day? The fast food that gets ordered in during lunch or dinner meetings? The non-stop chocolate fest that runs from Thanksgiving to New Years Day? Unhealthy choices overwhelm us constantly. Plus, "junk food" tastes good, so this makes choosing healthier alternatives a challenge.
So, How Can You Improve Your Career By Eating Better? Follow These Four Steps:
    1. Decide To Eat Better
This is an important first step. Many of us do not want to give up our great tasting treats. Some of us can't even imagine ourselves without these foods because they get us through the day. And, half of the time we may not even realize what we are doing. But, what about the other side? What happens once that momentary pleasure passes and you are left with the side effects? Feeling tired, jittery, or wanting more. Food gives us a feeling of elation. In the moment, we feel great. Afterwards, we don't. We know the cycle needs to stop, but we do not know how to stop it. The cycle of unhealthy eating can stop once you recognize what you are doing and decide to stop it.
    2. Plan To Eat Better
Because unhealthy food choices surround us, the way to better eating is good planning. If you know you will be working through lunch and your boss is ordering pizza, request that a salad be part of the delivery. If Bob is taking orders for breakfast, choose egg whites or whole wheat toast. If you will be in your car all day for business purposes, pack healthy foods for the ride. If you know you get hungry every day at 3 pm, keep a few healthy snacks in your desk in anticipation of this time. If you have to look for healthy choices when you are hungry, you will have a hard time finding them. Healthy choices will not be found at the gas station when you stop for gas, at the vending machine, or in the cafeteria. Eating healthy is important for your mental and physical well-being, so plan ahead.
    3. Eat Better
You are sitting at your desk. You are staring at an apple. You don't really want this apple but you feel like you "should" eat it. What will you do? Throw the apple in the garbage and hit the vending machine for chocolate covered peanuts? Or, eat the apple because you know you will feel better AND you made a promise to yourself that you would eat better? In our careers, we come to certain points when we know that if we do not do something different, then the outcome will always stay the same. This is one of those moments. Are you tired of feeling tired? When the answer is yes, your food choices will change. The way to eat better is to eat better. The place to start is your next meal. The beginning (which requires change) is tough. But once you form new habits, you will not want to go back to your unhealthy ways.
    4. Make A Change In Your Career
Now that you feel better, use your newfound energy to create a career you really want.
So, what do you say? You only have one life to live, so it might as well be a life you love! ( jobs employment )

    The Accountable Job Search

Career job information for job seekers and find good employment job

I lost my job a couple weeks after Christmas. I guess that is better than losing it right before Christmas. At least this way I got to enjoy the holidays, and I wasn't in a big job search during a time when no hiring decisions where made.

I had never been unemployed before, but I was sure I knew what to do. I spent about ten hours a day, six days a week in my job search. I was anxious to move on to greener pastures and, in spite of the hurt from getting laid-off, I was excited to see what else the world had to offer me. Boy was I in for a big surprise!

My job search was very targeted, focused and disciplined. I set performance metrics and worked hard each day to meet my goals. It was invigorating to wrap up a day and be able to say that I applied to 7 jobs that day! Considering I customized each cover letter and resume, 7 applications in one day was a lot of work!

But my job search was going nowhere. Week after week of these efforts produced not one call for an interview. The most I got was some cold, automated e-mail. I didn't understand what I was doing wrong.

Now, six months later, I have a much clearer perspective on what I should have done. Six months without work is a lot longer than the four weeks that I thought I'd be out of work. If I could rewind time I know exactly what I would do differently. Aside from tweaking techniques and fixing my resume, I would immediately get a job coach. Looking back now I realize that my prospective coaches were all around me, waiting for me to ask them to help.

I won't say that I was too proud to get a coach -- I just thought it was totally unnecessary. I was sure that I was working hard at my job search, and that it would pay off within weeks! I was too busy doing all the right things to need a coach (who would have told me I was not doing all the right things)!

Even though I didn't have a problem with my work ethic, I did have a problem with my job search techniques. A coach would have identified this immediately and set me on the right path. You see, a coach has some distinct advantages over a job seeker.

First, the coach is not as emotionally involved as I am. I didn't realize that a job search would be one of the most dramatic emotional rollercoasters I would ever be on. I'm not an overly emotional person, but not having an income to support my growing family combined with the feeling of rejection from HR or hiring managers was something I was unprepared for.

Coaches can stand back from your situation and maintain a healthy perspective to conquer each task, each day. When you are down (and it happens in a job search, especially as the days turn into weeks and months) it is so helpful to have someone that is in your corner. The coach is there to keep you on the right track, which they can see without an emotional bias.

Second, the right coach will have a better understanding of successful techniques and tactics than you do. It is the coach's business to know current trends and techniques – and they are tapped into better sources of information than you are. For example, I assumed I knew how much time to spend applying to jobs. It seemed like common knowledge. But I had spent the last eight years studying and working – not learning about effective job search skills.

So I spent all of my time applying to jobs posted on job boards. A coach would have helped me understand that I should spend my time in a mix of activities - perhaps 15% of my time with the job boards and applications, and 80% of my time networking and contacting hiring companies directly.

The coach would have trained me how and when to network. The coach would have showed me how to find companies that are hiring and what to say to them when I call. Having a developed an effective job search strategy based on these techniques would have been significantly more beneficial than just doing what I thought was right. The truth is, coaches have "been there, done that" and I was just making the same mistakes that most people make.

Third, one of the key roles of a coach is to hold me accountable. Switching from a full work schedule to an empty unemployed schedule can present its own problems. Having complete control over 40-50 hours each week without reporting to someone can lead to a little too much time surfing the internet for jobs and not enough time doing the hard stuff (networking). Just knowing that a coach would have weekly meetings with me, at the same time each week, would be a great motivator to ensure that I don't slip into what's comfortable.

My coach would want to know how I did last week, and how much time spent on each technique. If I disagree with the techniques then we can talk about it at the next session, but for now I need to follow a program that has been proven. Again, coaches may not specialize in my particular field, but they do specialize in getting a job that I will love and a salary that I will be happy with.

So, if I could turn back time to that fateful January day, I would look for a coach right away. Some coaches would have billed me, and it might have been worth it. Other coaches would have helped me for free - perhaps a coach from a local job center or a university career center. No matter what you look for in a coach, make sure that they teach with proven principles, they have proven techniques and tools, and they can provide you with the level of accountability that you need.
